Shoaling vs schooling
The terms are used interchangeably in shops. Is there a difference that matters?
Short answer
Yes. A shoal is a loose social group; a school is a coordinated, aligned formation. Both need numbers, but a true schooling species also needs the horizontal length to swim as a formation.

Which to choose
Shoaling
Most community fish shoal. Numbers matter more than tank length for them.
Schooling
For a true schooling species, budget the tank length as well as the group size — a school in a short tank spends its time turning.
One caveat
A shoaling species held in a tight motionless group in daylight is showing a stress response, not schooling. It is a useful early warning.
