Biosecurity and responsible disposal
Goldfish, guppies, common plecos, convict cichlids, weather loaches, Cabomba, Elodea and water lettuce are all established outside their native ranges, and aquarium release is a documented pathway for each. Plants and water carry propagules and pathogens even when no animal is involved.
Short answer
Aquarium animals, plants and water must never enter the wild. Released aquarium life is one of the main pathways by which invasive species establish in fresh water.
If you can no longer keep something
- Rehome through a local aquarium society, a specialist retailer that takes returns, or another keeper.
- Dispose of unwanted plants in household waste or a hot compost heap — never in a watercourse, a garden pond or a drain.
- Never empty tank water into a drain that discharges to open water.
- If an animal is beyond rehoming, ask an aquatic veterinarian about humane euthanasia rather than releasing it.
Before you buy
Check adult size, lifespan and legal status first. A large share of released fish are animals that outgrew their tank — clown loaches, common plecos, oscars and goldfish above all. The decision that prevents a release is made at the point of purchase.
