Sold from adjacent tanks under one word. The wild records for the German blue ram and the Bolivian ram do not overlap in temperature or in pH — and the ranges AquariumHQ advises for them do. Both of those facts are true, and the gap between them is the interesting part.

One word, two genera-mates, two different animals

The German blue ram is Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, from the Orinoco llanos. The Bolivian ram is Mikrogeophagus altispinosus, from the Rio Mamore and Guapore drainages. They are congeners and they are not interchangeable, and the shared word does not come from either of those facts — it comes from shelf labelling.

There is no German in the German blue ram. The name records where the fish was commercially bred for the European trade, not where it lives, which is a good illustration of how much of aquarium nomenclature is about commerce rather than biology.

The wild records do not meet

FishBase records the German blue ram from water at 27–30 °C and pH 5.0–6.0. It records the Bolivian ram from 22–26 °C, and gives its pH as a half-open range starting at 7.0 with no upper bound published.

Those environmental ranges do not overlap in either dimension. Not narrowly — at all. One fish is recorded from warm, distinctly acidic water and the other from cooler water that is neutral or above.

The Bolivian ram's pH does not appear in the live figures below, and its absence is deliberate. FishBase published a floor of 7.0 and no ceiling, so AquariumHQ holds it as a constraint rather than a range — inventing an upper bound to make the arithmetic tidier would produce a number indistinguishable from a measured one.

And yet the advice overlaps, for a reason

AquariumHQ's own advised ranges for the two fish DO overlap — comfortably on hardness, workably on pH, at the edge on temperature. That is not an inconsistency with the paragraph above, and resolving it is the whole point of keeping wild observation and captive recommendation as separate kinds of value.

Almost every German blue ram sold has been commercially bred for many generations in water nothing like the Orinoco llanos. The advised range describes the animal in the shop. The recorded range describes the species in the wild. A catalogue that collapsed them would have to choose which of its readers to mislead.

The practical consequence survives anyway: the German blue ram wants the warm end and the Bolivian ram the cool end, and a tank set for one is set at the wrong end for the other.

What actually differs in a tank

The Bolivian ram is larger, hardier, and considerably more tolerant of the water most people have. The German blue ram is smaller, shorter-lived, notoriously sensitive in the first weeks after purchase, and wants warmth that suits very few of its usual tankmates.

A keeper who buys 'a ram' on the strength of advice written about the other one has bought a different animal with different needs, and the word on the label gave them no way to know.

What AquariumHQ concludes

  • Treat the shared name as a shelf label, not a husbandry category. Establish which species is in the tank before applying any advice to it.
  • The German blue ram belongs at the warm, soft end of a tank built around it. The Bolivian ram suits ordinary community conditions and is the better choice for almost everybody.
  • Where the wild records and the advised ranges disagree, both are shown. The species has not changed; the population being sold has.

What this still cannot establish

Published rather than omitted. A case study with no stated limits has not had its limits looked for.

  • The environmental ranges come from one source, FishBase, and are collection records rather than measurements of what either species tolerates.
  • AquariumHQ holds no independent source for either fish's temperature, so the wild figures are uncorroborated.
  • The claim that commercial breeding has broadened tolerance is reasoning from how the fish are produced, not a measurement of captive-bred stock. No source consulted here quantifies it.
  • Behavioural differences between the two are drawn from keeping experience rather than from published behavioural work.
