A Central American cichlid that fights almost entirely by bluff: it flares a brilliant red throat and gill covers to look twice its size, and generally does not follow through. That makes it one of the few mid-sized cichlids that works in a community tank.

Adult size and growth
13–17 cm (5.1–6.7 in) — Males larger, to around 15 cm. Sold at 4–5 cm.
