Macrospilus otocinclus

One of the two otocinclus species that make up most of the trade, distinguished by a large rounded blotch at the tail base. It is a specialised grazer of soft algae and biofilm, and it starves in clean tanks more often than it dies of anything else.

What keeping this species involves

Peaceful and undemanding in temperament, and easy to starve. It needs an established tank with real algal growth and continuous vegetable feeding.

Slow margins of clear and white-water streams among vegetation and submerged wood, grazing surfaces in shallow water.

Identity and names

Common name
Macrospilus otocinclus
Scientific name
Otocinclus macrospilus
Family
Loricariidae
Order
Siluriformes
Class
Actinopterygii
Also sold as
Otocinclus macrospilus, macrospilus oto, dwarf sucker catfish

Adult size and growth

3.5–4.5 cm (1.4–1.8 in)

Typical lifespan in an aquarium: 3–5 years. Almost every animal sold in a shop is a juvenile, so the tank has to suit the size in the first line rather than the size in the bag.

Shape, which is what the compatibility engine reads instead of length alone: depressed — flattened top to bottom with a grazing or sucking mouth. Assigned from what is typical of Loricariidae, not examined for this species.

Water and tank requirements

A shoaling grazer that needs enough surface area growing biofilm to feed a group. The requirement is grazeable surface rather than swimming room.

The bands AquariumHQ publishes for the macrospilus otocinclus, each drawn against the full range this catalogue uses for that parameter. A narrow band on a wide scale is a specialist; a wide one is a genuinely tolerant animal. Source: AquariumHQ husbandry position for this record — an editorial range, not a measurement

Why these ranges: Upper Amazon stream margins, soft and near-neutral. The genus is sensitive to nitrate and to unstable water rather than to a particular figure, and a mature tank matters more than the numbers.

Where these figures come from

Habitat class

Whitewater river

Turbid, sediment-laden rivers carrying Andean or equivalent mountain runoff — the Solimões and Madeira type — with near-neutral pH and appreciably more dissolved mineral than black or clear water.

Not soft water. Species from the white-water channels are frequently sold as though they wanted Rio Negro conditions, and they do not.

Conductivity
50–160 µS/cm
Flow
high
Dissolved oxygen
near saturation
Seasonality
strong

These are figures for the KIND of water body, not measurements of this species. They are AquariumHQ’s summary of the general limnology and are given wide because the water is.

StructureWood, broad-leaved plants and rock — surfaces that grow biofilm. A newly set-up tank has none and cannot support the fish.

Group size and social behaviour

Shoals loosely and grazes as a group. Single specimens are more inactive and are reported to be harder to keep feeding.

Behaviour

  • Grazes broad surfaces in short scraping passes and rests attached to leaves and glass between them.
  • Feeds during the day, which is unusual among the small loricariids and makes it easy to check whether it is eating.

Telling males from females

Females are broader across the body seen from above. There is no other reliable difference.

Feeding

A specialist on soft algae and biofilm. It will not eat hair algae or black brush algae, and a tank with no soft growth needs vegetable food supplied continuously.

Staples

Tankmates and compatibility

Assessments are derived from stored traits by the compatibility engine, with the reasoning shown. A verdict is a statement about probability, not a guarantee — individual temperament can override it.

Risk this species poses to common tankmates
TowardsRiskWhat it means
Small fishnoneAnything that fits in the mouth is at risk once this species reaches adult size.
Adult dwarf shrimpnoneCover reduces losses but rarely prevents them where the risk is high.
ShrimpletsnoneDetermines whether a shrimp colony can grow rather than merely persist.
SnailsnoneApplies to snails you wanted as well as snails you did not.
Long or trailing finsnoneFin damage is an entry point for secondary infection.
Plantsgrazes-algaeTough species such as Anubias and Java fern survive most grazers.

Any pair in the catalogue can be assessed with the compatibility checker.

Welfare considerations

Points where the way this species is commonly sold or kept differs from what it actually needs.

  • Almost all stock is wild-caught and arrives having gone without food in transit. Losses in the first fortnight are high and are largely a starvation and stress problem rather than a disease one.
  • Adding it to a new tank to control algae is a standard recommendation and a poor one. There is nothing for it to eat in a tank young enough to have an algae problem it can solve.

Problems to watch for

Most problems in a tank containing this species are general rather than species-specific. Start with the troubleshooting index and work from the observation rather than from a guess at the cause.

What AquariumHQ does not yet hold

Species-level disease susceptibility is modelled in the graph and is not yet populated. Health pages will not be published until each condition has veterinary sourcing, because health content written without evidence is the most harmful thing this product could publish. The gap is recorded in the coverage report.

Where it comes from

Native range
The upper Amazon — Colombia, Ecuador and Peru
Habitat
Slow margins of clear and white-water streams among vegetation and submerged wood, grazing surfaces in shallow water.

What the checklists say

7 distribution statements retrieved from GBIF checklists. Establishment means is reproduced from the source where it states one, and left unstated where it does not — a record of presence is not a record of origin.

StatusPlacesWhat this means
Native2A checklist states the species occurs here naturally.
Recorded as present, establishment means not stated5The source records the species as present and does not say whether it is native or introduced. AquariumHQ does not fill that in.

Evidence

Every stored value with the kind of support behind it and where to check it. Evidence type and confidence are separate axes: an editorial position held confidently and a measurement held tentatively are different things.

Why we say this

What each figure on this page rests on, and how far that is from being independently established.

Every figure on this page has a provenance. Open any claim to see what AquariumHQ holds for it, which sources say what, and what a claim of that kind actually needs. Different claims need different evidence: an accepted scientific name is settled by one authority, while a legal restriction needs a current primary instrument. A single source is often the right answer rather than a thin one.
