Red whiptail catfish

A slender armoured catfish shaped like a twig, resting on sand and wood and grazing biofilm from them. It is peaceful, small enough for an ordinary tank, and one of the few loricariids that breeds readily in home aquaria.

What keeping this species involves

Peaceful and undemanding in temperament, and dependent on clean well-oxygenated water and a diet that does not assume it will scavenge. It is easily out-competed at feeding time.

Sandy and silty river margins with submerged wood and leaf litter, in slow to moderate flow.

Identity and names

Common name
Red whiptail catfish
Scientific name

Family

Class
Actinopterygii
Also sold as
Rineloricaria lanceolata, Rineloricaria hasemani, whiptail loricaria

Adult size and growth

10–13 cm (3.9–5.1 in)

Typical lifespan in an aquarium: 5–8 years. Almost every animal sold in a shop is a juvenile, so the tank has to suit the size in the first line rather than the size in the bag.

Shape, which is what the compatibility engine reads instead of length alone: depressed — flattened top to bottom with a grazing or sucking mouth. Assigned from what is typical of Loricariidae, not examined for this species.

Water and tank requirements

A flat-bodied fish that lives on horizontal surfaces. Floor and hardscape surface area is the requirement rather than water volume.

The bands AquariumHQ publishes for the red whiptail catfish, each drawn against the full range this catalogue uses for that parameter. A narrow band on a wide scale is a specialist; a wide one is a genuinely tolerant animal. Source: AquariumHQ husbandry position for this record — an editorial range, not a measurement

Why these ranges: Upper Amazon margins, soft and near-neutral. The species is tolerant within that band and more sensitive to accumulated organic waste than to the figures themselves.

Where these figures come from

Habitat class

Clearwater lowland river

Transparent, mineral-poor rivers draining ancient shield geology — the Tapajós and Xingu type — with low sediment and good light penetration.

Soft water with more movement and more oxygen than a forest stream. Species from here generally want current and open swimming room as much as they want the chemistry.

Conductivity
20–100 µS/cm
Flow
moderate
Dissolved oxygen
near saturation
Seasonality
strong

These are figures for the KIND of water body, not measurements of this species. They are AquariumHQ’s summary of the general limnology and are given wide because the water is.

StructureFine sand, wood and slate with some current. Narrow tubes or pipes are used as spawning sites.

Group size and social behaviour

Peaceful with its own kind and best in a small group. Males compete mildly over spawning tubes and the competition does not escalate.

Structure
Loose group
Minimum group

Behaviour

  • Rests motionless on sand or wood for long periods, relying on shape and colour rather than on cover.
  • Males clean a chosen tube and remain wrapped around the eggs, leaving only briefly to feed.

Telling males from females

Mature males develop bristles along the sides of the snout and on the pectoral fins. Females do not.

Feeding

Grazes biofilm and algae from surfaces and takes sinking food. It does not rasp wood in the way Panaque does and will not survive on wood alone.

Diet type
Omnivore
Staples
Sinking vegetable wafers, Blanched courgette, Frozen bloodworm, Biofilm

Breeding

Strategy
Eggs laid in a tube or crevice and guarded by the male until they hatch
Difficulty

Parental care
guarding

One of the more accessible loricariids to breed. The male wraps around the clutch and fans it continuously.

Tankmates and compatibility

Assessments are derived from stored traits by the compatibility engine, with the reasoning shown. A verdict is a statement about probability, not a guarantee — individual temperament can override it.

Risk this species poses to common tankmates
TowardsRiskWhat it means
Small fishnoneAnything that fits in the mouth is at risk once this species reaches adult size.
Adult dwarf shrimpnoneCover reduces losses but rarely prevents them where the risk is high.
ShrimpletslowDetermines whether a shrimp colony can grow rather than merely persist.
SnailsnoneApplies to snails you wanted as well as snails you did not.
Long or trailing finsnoneFin damage is an entry point for secondary infection.
Plantsgrazes-algaeTough species such as Anubias and Java fern survive most grazers.

Any pair in the catalogue can be assessed with the compatibility checker.

Welfare considerations

Points where the way this species is commonly sold or kept differs from what it actually needs.

  • Poorly equipped to compete for food with fast midwater fish, and slow decline from under-feeding is the commonest way it is lost.
  • Sensitive to low oxygen and to warm still water. It is a river fish and shows it more quickly than most loricariids.

Problems to watch for

Most problems in a tank containing this species are general rather than species-specific. Start with the troubleshooting index and work from the observation rather than from a guess at the cause.

What AquariumHQ does not yet hold

Species-level disease susceptibility is modelled in the graph and is not yet populated. Health pages will not be published until each condition has veterinary sourcing, because health content written without evidence is the most harmful thing this product could publish. The gap is recorded in the coverage report.

Where it comes from

Native range
The upper Amazon basin — Peru, Bolivia and Brazil
Habitat
Sandy and silty river margins with submerged wood and leaf litter, in slow to moderate flow.

What the checklists say

10 distribution statements retrieved from GBIF checklists. Establishment means is reproduced from the source where it states one, and left unstated where it does not — a record of presence is not a record of origin.

StatusPlacesWhat this means
Native4A checklist states the species occurs here naturally.
Recorded as present, establishment means not stated6The source records the species as present and does not say whether it is native or introduced. AquariumHQ does not fill that in.

Evidence

Every stored value with the kind of support behind it and where to check it. Evidence type and confidence are separate axes: an editorial position held confidently and a measurement held tentatively are different things.

Why we say this

What each figure on this page rests on, and how far that is from being independently established.

Every figure on this page has a provenance. Open any claim to see what AquariumHQ holds for it, which sources say what, and what a claim of that kind actually needs. Different claims need different evidence: an accepted scientific name is settled by one authority, while a legal restriction needs a current primary instrument. A single source is often the right answer rather than a thin one.
