Ruby tetra

A tetra under two centimetres long and entirely red when it is settled, which it usually is not in a shop. It is one of the clearest cases in the hobby of a fish whose appearance in a tank bears no relation to its appearance in a bag, and it needs blackwater conditions to show anything at all.

What keeping this species involves

Small enough to be eaten by most community fish, needs blackwater conditions for anything past survival, and needs food small enough for a two-centimetre mouth.

Small, shaded, tannin-stained forest streams over sand and leaf litter, in very soft and acidic water.

Identity and names

Common name

Scientific name
Axelrodia riesei

Order
Characiformes
Class

Axelrodia riesei, Rio Meta tetra, red micro tetra

Adult size and growth

1.5–2 cm (0.6–0.8 in)

Typical lifespan in an aquarium: 2–4 years. Almost every animal sold in a shop is a juvenile, so the tank has to suit the size in the first line rather than the size in the bag.

Shape, which is what the compatibility engine reads instead of length alone: fusiform — the ordinary torpedo with a small terminal mouth. Assigned from what is typical of Characidae, not examined for this species.

Water and tank requirements

A nano shoaler in a tank long enough for a group to spread out, with the dark substrate and litter that make it colour up.

The bands AquariumHQ publishes for the ruby tetra, each drawn against the full range this catalogue uses for that parameter. A narrow band on a wide scale is a specialist; a wide one is a genuinely tolerant animal. Source: AquariumHQ husbandry position for this record — an editorial range, not a measurement

Why these ranges: Rio Meta blackwater tributaries — soft, acidic and tannin-stained. This band is a habitat statement and the fish will survive well above it while showing none of the colour it is bought for, which is worth stating as a husbandry fact rather than an aesthetic one.

Where these figures come from

Habitat class

Blackwater — Rio Meta blackwater tributaries

Tannin-stained water draining podzolic forest sand, carrying almost no dissolved mineral and a heavy load of humic and fulvic acid.

The defining property is the absence of mineral, not the colour. Water this soft has almost no buffering, so pH moves fast and a keeper's job is stability rather than chasing the wild figure.

These are figures for the KIND of water body, not measurements of this species. They are AquariumHQ’s summary of the general limnology and are given wide because the water is.

Group size and social behaviour

Needs a large group by nano-fish standards. Below about ten it hides continuously and shows no colour, which is usually diagnosed as poor stock.

Behaviour

  • Hangs in loose midwater formation among plant stems rather than schooling tightly.
  • Colours from pale pink to deep red over weeks in the right water, and the change is dramatic enough to be mistaken for a different fish.

Telling males from females

Females slightly deeper-bodied. Males show more intense red. Both are subtle.

Feeding

The mouth is very small. Standard flake is too large for it.

Staples

Difficulty

Reported as difficult and rarely done deliberately. Most trade stock is wild-caught.

Tankmates and compatibility

Assessments are derived from stored traits by the compatibility engine, with the reasoning shown. A verdict is a statement about probability, not a guarantee — individual temperament can override it.

Risk this species poses to common tankmates
TowardsRiskWhat it means
Small fishnoneAnything that fits in the mouth is at risk once this species reaches adult size.
Adult dwarf shrimpnoneCover reduces losses but rarely prevents them where the risk is high.
ShrimpletsmoderateDetermines whether a shrimp colony can grow rather than merely persist.
SnailsnoneApplies to snails you wanted as well as snails you did not.
Long or trailing finsnoneFin damage is an entry point for secondary infection.
PlantsnoneTough species such as Anubias and Java fern survive most grazers.

Any pair in the catalogue can be assessed with the compatibility checker.

Welfare considerations

Points where the way this species is commonly sold or kept differs from what it actually needs.

  • Almost entirely wild-caught from a restricted Colombian range and arrives in poor condition more often than not. Quarantine is not optional.
  • At under two centimetres it is prey for almost anything, including fish sold as peaceful community stock.

Problems to watch for

Most problems in a tank containing this species are general rather than species-specific. Start with the troubleshooting index and work from the observation rather than from a guess at the cause.

What AquariumHQ does not yet hold

Species-level disease susceptibility is modelled in the graph and is not yet populated. Health pages will not be published until each condition has veterinary sourcing, because health content written without evidence is the most harmful thing this product could publish. The gap is recorded in the coverage report.

Why we say this

What each figure on this page rests on, and how far that is from being independently established.

Every figure on this page has a provenance. Open any claim to see what AquariumHQ holds for it, which sources say what, and what a claim of that kind actually needs. Different claims need different evidence: an accepted scientific name is settled by one authority, while a legal restriction needs a current primary instrument. A single source is often the right answer rather than a thin one.
