Anchor worm

Lernaea species are crustaceans that have evolved into an extreme parasitic form. Only the adult female is the familiar thread — the earlier stages are free-swimming and look nothing like it. The embedded anchor causes a focal wound that commonly becomes secondarily infected, so the ulceration around the attachment point is frequently more serious than the parasite. It is predominantly a coldwater and temperate problem, and in the aquarium trade it arrives most often with pond fish, goldfish and imported coldwater species.

Short answer

Anchor worm is a parasitic copepod, not a worm. The adult female embeds an anchor-shaped attachment into the fish's muscle and hangs out of the skin as a whitish thread, often with two egg sacs at the trailing end. The visible parasite is the last stage of the life cycle; the free-swimming stages in the tank are the ones that reinfect.

Signs

  • Whitish or greenish threads 5–20 mm long protruding from the body, fins or gill covers, sometimes with a pair of trailing egg sacs
  • A reddened, raised or ulcerated area of skin where the thread emerges
  • Flashing and rubbing, often before the parasite is noticed
  • Localised inflammation rather than generalised skin change
  • In heavy infestations, loss of condition and lethargy

Do this first: the environmental response

Water quality is the cause, the contributing factor or the deciding variable in the great majority of aquarium health problems. These steps come before any treatment decision, and for several conditions they are the entire treatment.

  1. Test the water — the ulcerated attachment sites are entry points for secondary infection, and water quality decides how that goes.
  2. Improve water quality and reduce organic load while the wounds heal.
  3. Where the tank is a pond or coldwater system, expect the life cycle to run over weeks rather than days at the prevailing temperature.

What makes it more likely

Each entry states the mechanism, not just the association — an association without a mechanism is not something you can act on.

  • Pond or coldwater origin. The parasite's life cycle is favoured by temperate temperatures and by outdoor systems open to reinfection.
  • Live food or plants collected from open water. Free-swimming stages travel in water and on wet plant material.

Treatment categories

AquariumHQ names classes of response and never doses. Product concentrations differ between markets and formulations, several actives are temperature- and pH-dependent, and the invertebrate and plant tolerances that decide whether the rest of the tank survives are not printed on the label. Where a category puts a chemical in the water, what it can damage is stated with it.

Physical removal

Removing an embedded adult with fine forceps, drawing it out along the axis of attachment so the anchor comes with it, ends that individual parasite. It leaves a wound that then needs to be kept clean, and it does nothing about the free-swimming stages.

Do not use

  • Small fish, where the handling and the resulting wound are more dangerous than the parasite
  • Attachment sites near the eye or gill, which are better left to a veterinarian

Antiparasitic

Adds a chemical to the water

Products active against parasitic crustaceans target the free-swimming stages, which is where the infestation is actually sustained. The course must span the development interval at the tank's temperature.

What it can damage: Compounds active against parasitic crustaceans are, by their nature, also active against shrimp, crayfish and other ornamental crustaceans, and several affect snails. They must not be used in a tank containing invertebrates that are wanted.

Do not use

  • Any tank containing ornamental crustaceans
  • Use without addressing the secondary wound infection, which is often the more urgent problem

Antibacterial

Adds a chemical to the water

The attachment wound frequently becomes secondarily infected, and in several cases that infection rather than the parasite is what threatens the fish.

What it can damage: Antibacterial products affect the nitrifying bacteria in the filter, which can produce an ammonia spike during treatment. Test daily while treating.

Veterinary referral

Appropriate where the fish is valuable, where attachment sites are near the eyes or gills, or where secondary infection is established.

Isolation and quarantine

  • The free-swimming stages are in the water, so the tank is the unit to manage. Removing the visible parasites from one fish does not end the infestation.
  • Do not move plants, water or equipment from an affected system to a clean one.

When a vet is the right call

  • Attachment near the eye, gill or vent
  • Established ulceration around the attachment site
  • Heavy infestation on a small fish, where physical removal is not safe

Many treatments are given to healthy fish suffering from a water-quality problem, which makes the outcome worse rather than better.

Prevention

  • Quarantine new fish, particularly pond fish, goldfish and imported coldwater species, and inspect them closely.
  • Do not introduce water, plants or live food from open water sources.
  • Inspect fish at purchase — an embedded adult is one of the few aquarium parasites genuinely visible across a shop tank.
