Camallanus worms

Camallanus species are blood-feeding nematodes of the fish intestine. In natural conditions they use a copepod intermediate host, but in aquaria transmission also occurs directly when larvae released into the water are ingested — which is why an aquarium population sustains itself indefinitely without any intermediate host being present. Livebearers are the group most often reported affected, and the infection is frequently introduced with apparently healthy stock. Visible worms indicate a mature infection; the fish showing them is rarely the only one carrying them.

Short answer

Camallanus are intestinal nematodes whose females protrude from the fish's vent as short red threads. The red colour comes from the host's blood. By the time worms are visible the infection is established and usually present in other fish in the tank, including ones showing nothing.

Signs

  • A distended or hollow abdomen depending on stage
  • Wasting despite feeding — the classic presentation is a fish that eats and still loses condition

Do this first: the environmental response

Water quality is the cause, the contributing factor or the deciding variable in the great majority of aquarium health problems. These steps come before any treatment decision, and for several conditions they are the entire treatment.

  1. Increase water changes and remove detritus, which reduces the concentration of larvae available to be ingested.
  2. Test water quality — affected fish are in poor condition and less able to tolerate anything else being wrong.
  3. Feed well during treatment: the fish are being drained of blood and nutrients and need support.

    How to tell it apart: Faeces are brown, white or the colour of the food, detach on their own and vary through the day. Camallanus are consistently red, are anchored, and retract into the vent when the fish is startled — the retraction is the decisive observation.

  • Underfeeding or food competition

    How to tell it apart: A fish that is out-competed loses condition but has a normal vent and normal faeces, and improves when target-fed. This is far more common than parasitism as an explanation for a thin fish.

    How to tell it apart: Wasting with no visible worms has many causes, including several intestinal parasites, mycobacteriosis and simple food competition. Where no red threads are visible, the identification is not Camallanus.

What makes it more likely

Each entry states the mechanism, not just the association — an association without a mechanism is not something you can act on.

  • Livebearers in the stocking list. Guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails are the group in which aquarium Camallanus infections are most frequently reported, and commercial livebearer production lines are a common route of introduction.
  • Absence of quarantine. The infection is invisible for a long period, so an unquarantined fish can seed a tank months before anything is seen.

Treatment categories

AquariumHQ names classes of response and never doses. Product concentrations differ between markets and formulations, several actives are temperature- and pH-dependent, and the invertebrate and plant tolerances that decide whether the rest of the tank survives are not printed on the label. Where a category puts a chemical in the water, what it can damage is stated with it.

Anthelmintic (worming)

Worming preparations used in fish medicine are the established response. Because a proportion of the population is at larval stages when the first course is given, a repeat course after an interval is standard practice.

What it can damage: Several worming actives used against nematodes are toxic to ornamental snails and some are toxic to shrimp. Dying worms and any invertebrate losses add to the organic load, and the affected fish are already compromised.

Do not use

  • Treating only the visibly affected fish, which leaves the reservoir intact
  • Tanks with valued snail populations, unless the loss is accepted

Supportive care

Affected fish are anaemic and undernourished. Good feeding and stable water during and after treatment materially affect whether they recover.

Veterinary referral

Appropriate where the diagnosis is uncertain, where treatment has failed, or where a suitable preparation is not available without veterinary involvement in your jurisdiction.

Isolation and quarantine

  • Isolating the visibly affected fish does not protect the rest — direct transmission in the aquarium means the tank is almost certainly already infected.
  • Treat the whole system, and treat every fish in it rather than only those showing worms.

When a vet is the right call

  • Uncertainty about the identification
  • Failure to respond to a first course of treatment
  • Jurisdictions where suitable preparations require a veterinary prescription
  • Continuing losses in a group

Many treatments are given to healthy fish suffering from a water-quality problem, which makes the outcome worse rather than better.

Prevention

  • Quarantine all new fish, and quarantine livebearers for longer — this infection hides well.
  • Buy from suppliers who quarantine, and avoid tanks where any fish shows red threads.
  • Do not move water or equipment between an affected tank and any other.
  • Watch for wasting in a fish that is eating; it is the earliest reliable sign.

  • The relative importance of direct versus copepod-mediated transmission in aquaria is described consistently in the veterinary literature but AquariumHQ holds no quantitative data on it.
