Chaetogaster limnaei is closely associated with freshwater snails and is frequently reported as commensal — it feeds on ciliates, rotifers and small invertebrates in the water film around the host, and there is work suggesting it may consume trematode larvae that would otherwise infect the snail. A form living in the snail's kidney is reported as more genuinely parasitic. For an aquarist, the practical position is that visible worms on a snail are usually not the problem the keeper thinks they are, and that abundant worms of any kind indicate a tank with a heavy organic load.

This cannot honestly be identified by eye. Confirmation needs a skin or gill scrape examined under a microscope, which a veterinarian or an experienced fish-health service can do. Treatments aimed at it are frequently given on a guess.

How to tell it apart: Look at the substrate and glass as well as the snail. A general population of small worms throughout the tank is a maintenance signal rather than anything to do with the snails, and it is much the commonest explanation.
