Chaetogaster on snails

Chaetogaster limnaei is closely associated with freshwater snails and is frequently reported as commensal — it feeds on ciliates, rotifers and small invertebrates in the water film around the host, and there is work suggesting it may consume trematode larvae that would otherwise infect the snail. A form living in the snail's kidney is reported as more genuinely parasitic. For an aquarist, the practical position is that visible worms on a snail are usually not the problem the keeper thinks they are, and that abundant worms of any kind indicate a tank with a heavy organic load.

Small pale worms moving on a snail's shell and body are usually Chaetogaster, an oligochaete that lives on snails and feeds on small organisms in the water around them. It is generally regarded as commensal rather than harmful, and its presence is more informative about the tank than about the snail.

Signs

  • Small pale or translucent worms, roughly 1–5 mm, moving on the shell and around the aperture

Do this first: the environmental response

Water quality is the cause, the contributing factor or the deciding variable in the great majority of aquarium health problems. These steps come before any treatment decision, and for several conditions they are the entire treatment.

  1. Test water quality and review feeding. An abundant worm population of any kind is a signal about organic load.
  2. Reduce feeding and increase substrate maintenance if worms are numerous throughout the tank.
  3. Otherwise observe. A snail feeding and moving normally with a few worms on it does not need intervention.

What makes it more likely

Each entry states the mechanism, not just the association — an association without a mechanism is not something you can act on.

  • Heavy organic load. The worm feeds on microfauna, and microfauna abundance tracks the organic matter available. A tank full of worms is a tank being overfed.
  • Introduction on plants. Small invertebrates travel readily on wet plant material.

Treatment categories
