Moulting failure in shrimp

Shrimp grow by shedding and rebuilding their exoskeleton, and the process depends on calcium and magnesium availability and on stable osmotic conditions. Where general hardness is too low, the new exoskeleton is inadequate; where a water change swings hardness or temperature sharply, a shrimp part-way through the process can fail to complete it. The gap visible as a white line is the separation between the old carapace and the abdomen. Aquarists describe this as the 'white ring of death', and the name has spread further than the evidence behind the specific interpretation — what is well supported is that mineral availability and parameter stability matter, not that a particular visible line reliably predicts an outcome.

Short answer

A shrimp that cannot complete a moult dies part-way out of its old exoskeleton. The associated sign keepers watch for is a white line across the back between carapace and abdomen. It is generally attributed to mineral availability and to abrupt parameter changes, and it is one of the few shrimp problems a keeper can genuinely reduce by managing water chemistry.

Signs

Do this first: the environmental response

Water quality is the cause, the contributing factor or the deciding variable in the great majority of aquarium health problems. These steps come before any treatment decision, and for several conditions they are the entire treatment.

  1. Test general hardness. This is the first measurement, and very soft water is the commonest correctable factor.
  2. Remineralise if hardness is below the species' range, using a preparation intended for shrimp rather than a general buffer.
  3. Change water little and often rather than rarely and heavily, and match temperature and hardness when you do.
  4. Feed a varied diet including a food formulated for shrimp, and provide surfaces for biofilm to develop.
  5. Keep temperature stable.

    How to tell it apart: A successful moult leaves a translucent, empty, perfectly shaped shell that holds its form and is often eaten within a day. This is normal and healthy, and it is mistaken for a dead shrimp constantly. Count your living shrimp before concluding anything.

What makes it more likely

Each entry states the mechanism, not just the association — an association without a mechanism is not something you can act on.

  • General hardness too low for the species. Calcium and magnesium are the raw materials of the new exoskeleton. Very soft water does not supply them, and remineralising specifically for shrimp is standard practice for this reason.
  • Large or rapid water changes. An abrupt change in hardness or osmolarity during the moult cycle is a frequently reported precipitant, which is why shrimp keepers favour smaller and more frequent changes than fish keepers do.
  • Temperature swings. Moult frequency is temperature-linked, and a sudden change can trigger a moult under unfavourable conditions.
  • Inadequate diet. Mineral and protein availability affect exoskeleton formation. A colony grazing biofilm alone in a sterile tank is not well fed.

Treatment categories

Correct the husbandry

Correcting hardness, feeding properly and stabilising the water-change routine addresses the factors most consistently associated with the problem. There is no treatment for an individual animal already failing to moult.

Dietary management

A varied diet with adequate mineral content supports exoskeleton formation across the colony, which is where the intervention actually works.

No treatment indicated

Nothing should be dosed. Adding a product to a tank whose problem is water chemistry instability makes the instability worse, and shrimp are sensitive to almost everything.

Veterinary referral

Veterinary services for ornamental dwarf shrimp are rarely available. Worth pursuing only for a valuable breeding colony with sustained unexplained losses.

Isolation and quarantine

  • Isolation achieves nothing. The animal is either going to complete the moult or not, and handling a moulting shrimp makes matters worse.
  • Never attempt to help a shrimp out of its exoskeleton. The new one beneath is soft and is damaged by handling.

When a vet is the right call

  • Sustained losses in a colony where hardness and water quality have been corrected
  • A commercially valuable colony where the cause cannot be identified
