Vorticella and stalked ciliates on invertebrates

The organism is a filter feeder that uses the shrimp as a perch, and it becomes abundant where dissolved organic matter and bacterial counts are high. A shrimp with a light growth is usually otherwise healthy; a heavy growth interferes with movement and with the gills, and it points at a tank with too much organic load. Because the shrimp sheds its exoskeleton, a successful moult removes the growth entirely — which is both the natural resolution and the reason the correct response is to fix the water and let the animal moult rather than to treat it.

Vorticella are stalked ciliates that attach to a shrimp's exoskeleton and look like a white or greyish fuzz, frequently mistaken for fungus. Like Epistylis on fish, they feed on bacteria in the water rather than on the animal, so their presence is a signal about the water rather than about the shrimp.

Signs

  • White, greyish or slightly greenish fuzz on the exoskeleton, legs or antennae
  • Growth that does not extend into the tissue, sitting on the surface only

Do this first: the environmental response

Water quality is the cause, the contributing factor or the deciding variable in the great majority of aquarium health problems. These steps come before any treatment decision, and for several conditions they are the entire treatment.

  1. This is the treatment. Reduce organic load: increase water-change frequency, clean the substrate, reduce feeding, and check the tank is not overstocked.
  2. Improve mechanical filtration and remove accumulated detritus.
  3. Test general hardness and correct it if low, since a shrimp that cannot moult cannot shed the growth.
  4. Then wait for the moult. A shrimp in good water with adequate minerals resolves this itself.

What makes it more likely

Each entry states the mechanism, not just the association — an association without a mechanism is not something you can act on.

  • Heavy organic load. Overfeeding, overstocking and infrequent maintenance raise the bacterial population the organism feeds on.
  • Infrequent moulting. A healthy shrimp sheds the growth with its exoskeleton. Anything that suppresses moulting — poor nutrition, low hardness, stress — lets it build up.

Treatment categories

Correct the husbandry

Reducing dissolved organic matter removes the organism's food supply, and supporting normal moulting removes the organism. This is the correct and sufficient response in the ordinary case.

Nothing should be dosed. The compounds effective against protozoa are hazardous to shrimp, and a shrimp with a surface growth is in far less danger from the growth than from the treatment.

Veterinary referral

Appropriate only for a valuable colony with heavy growth that persists after water quality has been corrected and moulting restored.

Isolation and quarantine

  • Isolation is not indicated. The organism responds to conditions in the water rather than spreading between animals in the usual way.
