Restriction note
Protected under national legislation in several European countries and listed under the Bern Convention and the EU Habitats Directive. Collection from the wild and, in some jurisdictions, keeping are restricted; check the national rules that apply locally before acquiring one. England and Wales additionally require a ministerial licence to keep any crayfish, which catches this species through the family-level scope of the 1996 Order.
What AquariumHQ has recorded, by jurisdiction, with the instrument each entry comes from and how far the check went. Ecological risk and legal status are separate: a species can be ecologically risky and legally unrestricted, or restricted where it could never establish.
EU
Not verified by AquariumHQpossessionThe consolidated Union list was read in full on 2026-08-29 and contains no entry for Astacus astacus, which is what one would expect of a species native to much of Europe. No restriction was identified in that instrument. That is not a finding that keeping this species is lawful: it is protected under national legislation in several European countries and under the Bern Convention, and those instruments have not been read here. Check with the relevant national authority before acquiring, selling or moving any animal.
Instrument: Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/1141 (consolidated text 02016R1141-20220802)
The useful contrast is with the signal crayfish immediately above. One European crayfish is on the Union list and one is protected from it, and the reason is the same in both cases — the introduced North American species carries a plague fatal to this one.

Permit requiredpossessionThe family-level prohibition covers Astacidae, so the noble crayfish requires a ministerial licence to keep in England and Wales. The Order's only species exceptions are the native white-clawed crayfish and the signal crayfish inside listed postcodes; this species is neither.

Permit requiredpossessionKeeping a designated invasive alien species requires permission from the competent minister. A keeping permit under the Act may be granted for academic research, exhibition, education and similar purposes. The Ministry states directly that keeping as a pet is not among them, so for an aquarist the practical effect of “permit required” is prohibition.
Instrument: Act on the Prevention of Adverse Ecological Effects Caused by Designated Invasive Alien Species (Act No. 78 of 2004), as amended 2022 — designated invasive alien species, Astacidae (all species), designated 2 November 2020
The designation is at FAMILY level. The Ministry's list gives Astacidae, Cambaridae, Cambaroididae and Parastacidae each as 全種 — all species — rather than naming individual crayfish, so a species need not appear anywhere by name to be caught. The only taxonomic exclusion is the native Cambaroides japonicus. Read from the Ministry's published list on the date shown.

This is the rule AquariumHQ states for every jurisdiction whether or not a law exists to back it. Here one does.

Permit requiredpossessionArticle 2(1) provides that no person shall keep any live crayfish except under the authority of a licence granted by the Minister. The prohibition is drawn at FAMILY level across Astacidae, Cambaridae and Parastacidae, excepting only the native white-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes and the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus within the postal districts listed in the Schedule.

Astacidae is inside the family-level scope of the Order. The instrument was read in full in Mega Sprint 1 and its scope confirmed; this entry applies that reading to a species the catalogue was previously silent about.

ProhibitedreleaseRelease or escape of any non-native animal into the wild is an offence. Crayfish are among the aquarium animals most capable of establishing in temperate fresh water, and several European crayfish populations began exactly this way.

Legal status is recorded from the sources named and was correct on the verification date shown. Rules change, and sub-national rules often differ from national ones. Check the current position with the relevant authority before acquiring, selling or moving any animal or plant.
Group size and social behaviour
Territorial and cannibalistic around moults, as crayfish generally are. It is displaced by the introduced North American species wherever they meet.
