Nitrate

Nitrate is the parameter most often used as a proxy for how overdue a water change is. The concentration at which it becomes harmful is genuinely disputed and varies by species — invertebrates and fry are more sensitive than adult fish, and chronic elevation is associated with poorer growth and breeding rather than with acute symptoms.

Nitrate is the end product of the aquarium nitrogen cycle and is far less toxic than ammonia or nitrite. It accumulates continuously and is removed by water changes and plant growth.

How to read a measurement

Bands are guidance for interpreting a reading, not thresholds with sharp edges. Sensitivity varies by species and by how long the exposure lasts.

Sources you may not have counted

  • Tap water. Nitrate in mains supply is regulated but not zero — in some agricultural areas it approaches the drinking-water limit, and a water change can then raise tank nitrate rather than lowering it.
  • Overfeeding, which is the single largest controllable source.
  • Decaying plant matter and detritus in the substrate.

Bringing a high tank down safely

A tank that has sat at 100 mg/L for months should not be taken to 10 mg/L in one change. Fish acclimatise to chronic conditions and a very large sudden change is itself a stressor. Reduce it over several days with successive moderate changes.

Testing nitrate reliably

Nitrate test kits are the least reliable in the common range. The second reagent in most liquid kits contains a precipitate that must be shaken hard — the instructions usually specify around 30 seconds — and under-shaking produces readings that are far too low. If your nitrate always reads zero in a stocked tank, suspect the test before believing it.
