Why it can work

- Cherry shrimp needs a group of at least 10. Kept in smaller numbers it is not simply lonely — shoaling species held below their threshold show chronic stress behaviour, colour loss and, in several species, increased aggression towards tankmates.
- The two occupy different levels of the tank, which reduces direct competition for space.

Behaviourally the outcome depends on the individual betta more than on anything a keeper controls: an established adult colony with dense cover usually persists, and a few shrimp added to a bare tank usually do not.
