Dwarf gourami iridovirus

Megalocytiviruses cause necrosis of the spleen and kidney and produce a wasting, non-specific illness with high mortality. Surveys reported in the veterinary and aquaculture literature have found a notable prevalence in commercially produced dwarf gouramis, which is why a species that is inexpensive and widely sold has an unusually poor survival record in home aquaria. Diagnosis requires laboratory work, there is no treatment, and infected fish can transmit to other species. Signs

Water quality is the cause, the contributing factor or the deciding variable in the great majority of aquarium health problems. These steps come before any treatment decision, and for several conditions they are the entire treatment.

  1. Test water quality first — it is both the commonest alternative explanation and a factor in how the fish copes.
  2. Maintain excellent water quality and reduce stress, which is supportive rather than curative.
  3. Stop adding fish to the system.

What makes it more likely

Each entry states the mechanism, not just the association — an association without a mechanism is not something you can act on.

  • Commercially farmed dwarf gouramis. High-density production and international movement of stock are the conditions under which this virus has spread, and prevalence in farmed dwarf gouramis specifically has been reported as substantial.
  • Absence of quarantine. Infected fish may appear healthy at purchase, and other species in the tank are susceptible.
  • Stress following transport. Commonly precipitates clinical disease in a fish carrying the virus.

Treatment categories

  • Recognise that a dwarf gourami dying without explanation is a well-documented pattern and not necessarily a husbandry failure — which is worth saying, because keepers routinely blame themselves for this one.
