Megalocytiviruses cause necrosis of the spleen and kidney and produce a wasting, non-specific illness with high mortality. Surveys reported in the veterinary and aquaculture literature have found a notable prevalence in commercially produced dwarf gouramis, which is why a species that is inexpensive and widely sold has an unusually poor survival record in home aquaria. Diagnosis requires laboratory work, there is no treatment, and infected fish can transmit to other species.
