pH has crashed

pH falls sharply, often overnight, to well below its usual value.

Short answer

A pH crash means the carbonate buffer ran out. Test KH — if it is at or near zero, that is the whole explanation, and the fix is to restore buffer gradually rather than to add a pH-up product.

Check these first, in this order

  1. Test KH
  2. How long since the last water change?
  3. Check for a large decaying source
  4. Test ammonia — nitrification will have stopped

Possible causes

Ordered by urgency, then by how commonly each one turns out to be the answer. The discriminator is the observation that separates this cause from the others — use it before acting.

Carbonate buffer exhausted

How to tell: KH at or near zero after a long period without water changes.

Check

  • KH
  • Water change history

Response

  • Restore KH gradually with successive moderate water changes, or a measured carbonate addition.
  • Do not swing the pH back up in one step — a rapid rise is as harmful as the fall, and it converts ammonium to toxic ammonia.

CO₂ injection running too high

How to tell: Planted tank with injection; pH falls during the photoperiod and recovers overnight.

Check

  • Drop checker
  • Injection rate and timing

Response

  • Reduce injection
  • Increase surface agitation
  • Switch injection off overnight

Large decaying mass

How to tell: Accompanied by an ammonia reading and often a smell. A dead fish, a large plant melt, or a filter left unrinsed.

Check

  • Search for the source
  • Ammonia

Response

  • Remove the source
  • Water change
  • Restore buffer

Acidic substrate or botanicals in very soft water

Observe and monitoroccasional

How to tell: Aquasoil substrate, heavy leaf litter or peat, with near-zero KH source water. Often intentional in blackwater setups.

Check

  • Substrate type
  • Amount of botanical material
  • Source water KH

Response

  • If intended, monitor and accept it — but understand that nitrification is much reduced below pH 6
  • If not, blend in harder water

What not to do

  • Bottled pH-up products, which produce a swing and then wear off
  • Restoring the pH in one large step

Prevention

  • Test KH monthly
  • Regular water changes
  • Watch KH trend rather than pH alone
