Fish are dying and I do not know why

Fish die without obvious warning in an established tank.

Short answer

Work through the physical and chemical causes before the biological ones. Most unexplained deaths in established tanks trace to something that entered the water, a temperature failure, or a slow decline in water quality that was never tested for.

Check these first, in this order

  1. Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and KH.
  2. Check the temperature with a thermometer you trust, not the heater dial.
  3. What has entered the room or the tank — aerosols, cleaning products, paint, insecticide, a new ornament?
  4. How long since the last water change, and how large was it?

Possible causes

Ordered by urgency, then by how commonly each one turns out to be the answer. The discriminator is the observation that separates this cause from the others — use it before acting.

Heater failure

How to tell: Temperature well outside the intended range. A stuck-on heater cooks a tank; a failed one chills it.

Check

  • Independent thermometer
  • Whether the heater indicator behaves as expected

Response

  • Replace the heater
  • Correct temperature gradually
  • Fit a second thermometer as a permanent check

Airborne or added contamination

How to tell: Sudden deaths across species with clean water tests. Aerosol sprays, insecticides, paint fumes, cleaning products, or hands with soap residue.

Check

  • What has been used in the room
  • Whether an air pump could have drawn fumes in
  • Any new object placed in the tank

Response

  • Large water change and activated carbon.
  • Remove the source and ventilate.
  • Turn off air pumps drawing air from a contaminated room.

Oxygen depletion

How to tell: Deaths overnight or in hot weather, often with survivors at the surface in the morning.

Check

  • Temperature
  • Surface agitation
  • Whether a filter stopped

Response

  • Increase aeration
  • Cool the tank
  • Reduce feeding

Slow water quality decline — old tank syndrome

How to tell: Infrequent water changes over months. KH near zero, pH low, nitrate high. Deaths often begin after a belated large water change swings everything back.

  • KH
  • pH
  • Nitrate
  • Water change history

Response

  • Correct gradually with successive moderate changes over days.
  • Do not perform one enormous change on a long-neglected tank.

Disease introduced with new stock

How to tell: Deaths began one to three weeks after new fish were added, and spread through the tank.

Check

  • Recent additions
  • Whether new fish were quarantined
  • Physical signs on affected fish

Response

  • Quarantine any survivors that can be moved
  • Seek veterinary advice
  • Quarantine all future additions

What not to do

  • Adding medication before testing
  • Replacing all the water and all the media at once

When to involve a vet

  • Deaths continue with clean water and correct temperature
  • Multiple species affected with visible signs
