Fish gasping at the surface

One or more fish hold position near the surface with rapid gill movement, often taking water from the very top layer. Species that normally use the middle or bottom of the tank are the significant ones.

Short answer

Gasping means the fish cannot get enough oxygen into its blood. That can be because there is too little oxygen in the water, or because the gills or the blood have been damaged — most often by ammonia or nitrite. Test the water first.

Check these first, in this order

  1. Test ammonia and nitrite immediately. These are the two causes that kill within hours.
  2. Check the water temperature — warm water holds less oxygen and the problem compounds.
  3. Check the filter is running and the surface is moving.
  4. Note WHICH fish are affected. All of them points to water; one of them points to that individual.

Ordered by urgency, then by how commonly each one turns out to be the answer. The discriminator is the observation that separates this cause from the others — use it before acting.

Ammonia or nitrite in the water

How to tell: Affects all or most fish at once, and the tank is new, recently disturbed, recently over-cleaned or recently overstocked. A test kit settles it in five minutes.

Check

  • Test ammonia
  • Test nitrite
  • Test pH — it decides how toxic a given ammonia reading is

Response

  • Large water change immediately — 50 % or more, temperature matched and dechlorinated.
  • Stop feeding until readings return to zero.
  • Increase aeration; damaged gills need every advantage.
  • Do not raise pH while ammonia is present.

Low dissolved oxygen

How to tell: All fish affected, water parameters clean, and something has raised demand or lowered supply — hot weather, a stopped filter, a bacterial bloom, or a recent medication that reduces oxygen.

Check

  • Check temperature
  • Check surface agitation
  • Look for cloudy water indicating a bacterial bloom

Response

  • Increase surface agitation — angle the filter outflow up, or add an air stone.
  • Cool the tank if it is above the species' range: float a sealed bottle of ice water, increase evaporation with a fan across the surface.
  • Reduce feeding for a few days.

Excess CO₂

How to tell: Planted tank with CO₂ injection. Symptoms appear late in the photoperiod or shortly after lights-on and improve overnight, and the drop checker is yellow rather than green.

Check

  • Check the drop checker colour
  • Check the injection rate and the solenoid timing

Response

  • Turn the CO₂ off immediately and increase surface agitation.
  • Reduce the injection rate and switch it off overnight.

Gill parasites or gill damage

How to tell: One or a few fish affected while the rest are unbothered, water parameters clean, and the affected fish may flick against surfaces or hold one gill cover open.

Check

  • Observe whether affected fish flash or scrape
  • Inspect the gills for pallor, swelling or excess mucus

Response

  • Improve water quality first — parasite infestations follow stress far more often than they cause it.
  • Quarantine the affected fish if a hospital tank is available.
  • Seek veterinary advice before medicating; gill pathogens are not distinguishable by eye.

Normal behaviour for the species

How to tell: The fish is a labyrinth species (betta, gourami), a corydoras, or a loach, and the surface trips are brief and purposeful rather than sustained. The fish feeds normally and shows no rapid gill movement.

Check

  • Identify the species and whether it is an air-breather
  • Watch whether feeding and colour are normal

Response

  • No action. Occasional surface gulping in these species is normal respiration.

When this is not a problem at all

Checked before anything else, because a keeper who learns their swollen fish is carrying eggs and their spotted fish is a breeding male has been spared two unnecessary medications.

  • Labyrinth fish taking air at the surface

    How to tell it apart: Gouramis, bettas and other anabantoids breathe atmospheric air as normal biology and surface routinely. Look at the other fish: if they are behaving normally, nothing is wrong.

  • Fish begging at the surface

    How to tell it apart: Fish that associate your approach with food gather and mouth at the surface, then disperse when you step back. Gasping fish do not disperse.

  • Nitrite poisoning

    How to tell it apart: Gasping that continues despite vigorous aeration, because the blood rather than the water has lost its oxygen-carrying capacity. Gills may look brown rather than red.

  • Oxygen deprivation

    How to tell it apart: Improves within minutes of increasing surface agitation. That response is both the treatment and the test — poisoning and gill disease do not improve on that timescale.

  • How to tell it apart: Water tests clean, aeration does not help, and individuals are affected unevenly. Confirmation needs a gill scrape under a microscope.

  • Velvet

    How to tell it apart: Look along the flank with a torch in a darkened room for a fine gold dusting. Velvet attacks the gills before the skin signs become obvious.

  • Chlorine or chloramine exposure

    How to tell it apart: Onset within minutes of a water change rather than over hours, with reddened gills and erratic swimming.

What not to do

  • Adding a general 'tonic' or antibacterial medication before testing the water. Most medications reduce dissolved oxygen further.
  • Raising the temperature, which lowers oxygen at the worst possible moment.

When to involve a vet

  • Water parameters are clean, oxygen is adequate, and fish continue to show respiratory distress.
  • Fish are dying despite corrected water quality.

Prevention

  • Cycle the tank fully before stocking, and stock gradually.
  • Keep a thermometer independent of the heater.
  • Maintain surface agitation, particularly in summer.
