Temperature
Fish are ectothermic: their metabolic rate, oxygen demand, digestion and immune response all move with the water temperature. A species kept several degrees above its range lives faster and dies sooner, which is the mechanism behind a great deal of unexplained short lifespan in the hobby.

Temperature sets the metabolic rate of everything in the tank — fish, plants, bacteria and pathogens alike — and determines how much oxygen the water can hold.
How to read a measurement
Bands are guidance for interpreting a reading, not thresholds with sharp edges. Sensitivity varies by species and by how long the exposure lasts.

Common mistakes
- Trusting the dial on the heater. Heater thermostats are frequently several degrees out. Always verify with a separate thermometer.
- Keeping subtropical species tropical. White Cloud Mountain minnows, zebra danios, goldfish, celestial pearl danios and weather loaches are all commonly kept warmer than suits them, and all live shorter lives for it.
- Chasing a species-specific number in a community tank. Where ranges overlap only narrowly, that is a compatibility problem to solve at stocking, not a temperature to compromise on.
Raising temperature as a treatment
Raising temperature is often recommended to accelerate the whitespot parasite's life cycle so that treatment reaches the vulnerable free-swimming stage sooner. It is a legitimate technique with two constraints that are frequently omitted: warmer water holds less oxygen just when the fish's gills are already compromised, so aeration must go up at the same time; and several species, including many scaleless fish and cool-water species, do not tolerate the elevated temperature at all.
