Chlorine and chloramine exposure

Chlorine is volatile and will leave standing water over time; chloramine, which is chlorine bound to ammonia, is deliberately more stable and does not. Many water suppliers have moved to chloramine for that reason, which has two consequences for aquarists: letting water stand no longer works as a treatment, and a dechlorinator that breaks the bond releases ammonia into the tank. Both compounds destroy gill epithelium on contact, so the injury is immediate and the presentation is respiratory. The other frequently overlooked route is the filter: rinsing media under the tap kills the nitrifying bacteria and produces an ammonia problem days later that is never connected back to the cause.

Short answer

Chlorine and chloramine are added to drinking water specifically to kill microorganisms, and they damage fish gills directly on contact. The signs appear within minutes of a water change rather than over hours, which is the observation that identifies it. Chloramine is the more troublesome of the two because it does not disperse and because neutralising it releases ammonia.

Do this first: the environmental response

Water quality is the cause, the contributing factor or the deciding variable in the great majority of aquarium health problems. These steps come before any treatment decision, and for several conditions they are the entire treatment.

  1. Add an appropriate dechlorinator to the whole tank volume immediately. This neutralises the chlorine within minutes and is the fastest available action.
  2. Where the supply is chloraminated, ensure the product used also handles the ammonia released, and test ammonia afterwards.
  3. Increase aeration — gill damage is the injury and oxygen uptake is compromised.
  4. Do not do another large water change with the same water until the cause has been established.
  5. Test ammonia over the following days: if the biological filter was killed by chlorinated water at the tap, an ammonia problem follows within days.

What makes it more likely

Each entry states the mechanism, not just the association — an association without a mechanism is not something you can act on.

  • A chloraminated supply. Chloramine does not dissipate on standing, so traditional precautions do not work, and neutralising it releases ammonia which then needs handling too.
  • Large water changes. The larger the proportion of new water, the less dilution protects the fish from an error.
  • Water supply changes and seasonal boosting. Suppliers periodically raise chlorine levels, particularly after mains work. A dose that was adequate last month may not be this month.

Treatment categories

Appropriate where fish are severely damaged and welfare decisions arise, or where secondary infection follows.

Isolation and quarantine

  • Moving fish to correctly prepared water of matched temperature is genuinely useful here, because the toxin is in the tank water and removing the fish from it stops the exposure.
  • Only do this if properly dechlorinated, temperature-matched water is actually available — moving fish into another bucket of the same tap water is the commonest way this goes wrong.

When a vet is the right call

  • Severe gill damage with continuing distress after the water has been corrected
  • Secondary infection developing in the following days
  • Welfare decisions about badly damaged fish
