Plant leaves turning yellow

Leaves lose green colour, sometimes with the veins staying green while the tissue between them pales.

Short answer

Which leaves are affected narrows it fast. Old leaves yellowing usually means a mobile nutrient — nitrogen — is short; new leaves yellowing usually means an immobile one, most often iron.

Check these first, in this order

  1. Are the OLD leaves or the NEW leaves affected?
  2. Do the veins stay green while the tissue between them pales?
  3. Is any fertiliser being used, and is the plant a root feeder?
  4. Test nitrate — a planted tank reading zero is nitrogen-limited.

Nitrogen deficiency

How to tell: Oldest leaves yellow uniformly and are shed. Nitrate tests at or near zero in a planted tank.

  • Which leaves are affected

Response

  • Dose a complete fertiliser containing nitrogen
  • In a heavily planted lightly stocked tank, nitrate genuinely can hit zero

Iron deficiency

How to tell: New leaves pale or yellow while veins stay green. Red plants lose colour first.

Check

  • Which leaves are affected
  • Whether a micronutrient fertiliser is dosed

Response

  • Dose a micronutrient fertiliser containing chelated iron
  • Note that iron test kits are unreliable for chelated forms

Root feeder in inert substrate

How to tell: Sword plants, cryptocorynes and other heavy root feeders in plain gravel or sand with liquid dosing only.

Check

  • Substrate type
  • Whether the plant is a root feeder

Response

  • Add root tabs near the crown
  • Repeat every few months

    Insufficient light

    How to tell: Lower and shaded leaves yellow and are shed while the top of the plant grows normally.

    Check

    • Light intensity and photoperiod
    • Whether floating plants or taller plants are shading it

    Response

    • Thin floating plants
    • Increase photoperiod modestly
    • Move the plant or choose a low-light species

      What not to do

      • Increasing light without also increasing carbon and nutrients, which produces algae rather than growth

      Prevention

      • Match plants to available light
      • Dose a complete fertiliser
      • Use root tabs for root feeders
