Gas bubble disease

Supersaturation arises when water is pressurised and then released, or when air is entrained into a pump's intake. Mains water is delivered under pressure and can be supersaturated straight from the tap, which is why the classic setting is a large water change from a fresh supply. A pump drawing air through a leaking intake seal produces the same effect continuously. The bubbles form in the smallest vessels and in tissues with thin coverings — fin membranes, the skin, behind the eye — and where they form in the gill circulation the consequences are serious. It is the mechanical fault rather than the fish that needs the attention.

Short answer

Gas bubble disease occurs when water holds more dissolved gas than it can retain at ambient pressure, and that gas comes out of solution inside the fish — as visible bubbles in the fins, skin and eyes. It is uncommon, it is genuinely identifiable by eye, and it almost always points to a specific mechanical fault.

Signs

  • Small gas bubbles visible within the fin membranes
  • Bubbles under the skin or in the eyes
  • Bulging eyes with visible bubbles behind them
  • Fine bubbles clinging to every surface in the tank, including the glass and decor
  • Several fish affected at once, shortly after a large water change or a pump problem
  • Respiratory distress in more severe cases

Do this first: the environmental response

Water quality is the cause, the contributing factor or the deciding variable in the great majority of aquarium health problems. These steps come before any treatment decision, and for several conditions they are the entire treatment.

  1. Increase surface agitation vigorously. This allows excess dissolved gas to leave solution at the surface rather than inside the fish, and is the fastest response.
  2. Find and fix the mechanical cause: check pump intake seals and pipework for air being drawn in.
  3. Stop further water changes from the suspect source until the water has been allowed to stand and degas, or is aerated before use.
  4. Where the cause is a fresh mains supply, aerate the replacement water vigorously in a container before adding it.

    How to tell it apart: Bubbles on the glass and decor alone, with entirely normal fish, are a common and harmless consequence of a water change and clear within a day. The condition requires bubbles within the fish's tissues, not on the tank.

  • Pearling in planted tanks

    How to tell it apart: Oxygen bubbles forming on plant leaves in a healthy, well-lit planted tank are a sign of vigorous photosynthesis and are entirely normal. They are on the plants, not in the fish.

What makes it more likely

Each entry states the mechanism, not just the association — an association without a mechanism is not something you can act on.

  • Large water changes direct from the mains. Mains water is delivered under pressure and can carry more dissolved gas than it will hold once at atmospheric pressure in the tank.
  • A leaking pump intake. Air drawn into the suction side of a pump is forced into solution under pressure and released into the tank.
  • Deep tanks. Pressure differences with depth influence where gas comes out of solution.

Treatment categories

AquariumHQ names classes of response and never doses. Product concentrations differ between markets and formulations, several actives are temperature- and pH-dependent, and the invertebrate and plant tolerances that decide whether the rest of the tank survives are not printed on the label. Where a category puts a chemical in the water, what it can damage is stated with it.

Correct the husbandry

Removing the supersaturation is the treatment: aerating the tank to allow gas to leave at the surface and fixing whatever was introducing it. There is no medication for a physical condition of the water.

Increase aeration

Vigorous surface movement equilibrates dissolved gas with the atmosphere, which is precisely what is needed.

Supportive care

Once the water is corrected, mild cases resolve as the gas redissolves and is excreted. Stability and observation are what is required.

Veterinary referral

Appropriate where fish are severely affected, particularly with eye involvement or respiratory distress.

Isolation and quarantine

  • Not useful in itself. The water is the problem, and the fault causing it needs finding.
  • Where a specific pump is the cause, turning it off is the isolation that matters.

When a vet is the right call

  • Eye involvement or respiratory distress

  • Let replacement water stand or aerate it before large changes, particularly straight from the mains.
  • Check pump and filter intake seals periodically — a leaking seal is the usual continuous cause.
  • Do not make very large water changes directly from a pressurised supply into a stocked tank.

  • Total dissolved gas saturation is not something aquarists can measure with hobby equipment, so identification rests on the visible signs and the circumstances rather than on a reading.
