Ichthyobodo infection (costia)

The organism is among the smallest parasites of freshwater fish, and it is detected only on a fresh wet mount — it stops moving and becomes hard to recognise within minutes of the sample being taken, which is why samples have to be examined immediately. Its clinical importance is out of proportion to its size: it can build to very high densities in crowded or chilled fish and cause heavy losses, especially in fry and recently transported stock. Because the appearance is a nonspecific mucus film, this is a condition that is either confirmed properly or not identified at all.

Short answer

Ichthyobodo is a tiny parasitic flagellate that infests skin and gills, producing a blue-grey film of excess mucus and heavy flashing. It is far too small to see, and the appearance it produces is shared with several other irritants. It is one of the more dangerous freshwater protozoa because heavy infestations can kill quickly, particularly in young fish.

Signs

Do this first: the environmental response

Water quality is the cause, the contributing factor or the deciding variable in the great majority of aquarium health problems. These steps come before any treatment decision, and for several conditions they are the entire treatment.

  1. Test ammonia and nitrite — both are differentials and both are contributing causes.
  2. Correct any chill and stabilise temperature within the species' range.
  3. Increase aeration where gills are involved.
  4. Reduce density and increase water changes.

What makes it more likely

Each entry states the mechanism, not just the association — an association without a mechanism is not something you can act on.

  • Chilling or a temperature drop. The organism tolerates cool conditions better than the fish's immune response does, which is why outbreaks classically follow a chill.
  • Fry and juvenile fish. Small fish have proportionally less reserve, and losses in fry can be extremely rapid.
  • Crowding and poor water quality. Raise transmission rate and lower the epithelial and immune defences that hold the population in check.

Treatment categories

Product concentrations differ between markets and formulations, several actives are temperature- and pH-dependent, and the invertebrate and plant tolerances that decide whether the rest of the tank survives are not printed on the label. Correcting chilling, crowding and water quality removes the conditions under which this organism proliferates, and is a necessary part of any response.

Antiprotozoal treatments are the standard response where the identification has been confirmed. Because the organism can kill rapidly, the interval between suspicion and confirmation matters.

What it can damage: Antiprotozoal products are hazardous to shrimp and snails, several reduce dissolved oxygen, and formalin-based products in particular impose an additional oxygen demand on fish whose gills are already affected.

  • Treating without excluding water-quality irritation, which is both more common and quicker to check
  • Tanks containing ornamental invertebrates

Veterinary referral

A fresh wet mount examined immediately is the only reliable identification, and rapid losses justify getting one quickly.

Isolation and quarantine

  • The tank is the unit. Equipment must not be moved to other systems without drying or disinfection.
  • Fry tanks are especially vulnerable, and should never share nets or siphons with adult tanks.

  • Mucus film and flashing with water quality confirmed good
  • Any decision to medicate that rests on suspicion alone

  • Quarantine new arrivals, and avoid chilling during transport and acclimatisation.
  • Keep fry systems separate, with their own equipment.
  • Avoid crowding, particularly in growing-on tanks.
