Chilodonella

The organism is flattened, heart-shaped and considerably larger than Ichthyobodo, which is how the two are separated under magnification and why they cannot be separated without it. It proliferates in cool water and at high stocking density, and it is a classic cause of unexplained losses in overwintering ponds and in crowded holding systems. Like the other skin protozoa, the clinical picture — grey film, flashing, respiratory distress — belongs to a family of causes of which water quality is the most common member.

Short answer

Chilodonella is a ciliate parasite of skin and gills that produces a greyish mucus film and can cause heavy losses quickly, particularly in cool water and in crowded fish. It cannot be identified without a microscope, and it is one of several organisms producing an identical appearance.

Do this first: the environmental response

Water quality is the cause, the contributing factor or the deciding variable in the great majority of aquarium health problems. These steps come before any treatment decision, and for several conditions they are the entire treatment.

  1. Test ammonia and nitrite before anything else — both are differentials and both are contributing causes.
  2. Increase aeration where gills are involved.
  3. Reduce stocking density and organic load.
  4. Correct chilling where the system can be warmed within the species' range, since cool water favours the organism over the fish.

What makes it more likely

Each entry states the mechanism, not just the association — an association without a mechanism is not something you can act on.

  • Cool water. The organism tolerates cool conditions better than the fish's immune response does, which is why it is classically an overwintering and early-spring problem.
  • Crowding and high organic load. Raise transmission rate and depress the epithelial defences that limit it.
  • Recently transported or handled fish. Mucus-layer damage and stress-induced immune suppression together.

Treatment categories

Antiprotozoal treatment is the standard response where the identification has been confirmed by microscopy. Given how quickly losses can accumulate, the interval between suspicion and confirmation matters.

What it can damage: Antiprotozoal products are hazardous to shrimp and snails, several reduce dissolved oxygen, and formalin-based preparations impose an additional oxygen demand on fish whose gills are already compromised.

  • Treating without excluding water-quality irritation, which is both more common and faster to check
  • Tanks containing ornamental invertebrates

Veterinary referral

A skin or gill scrape under a microscope is the only reliable identification, and it also distinguishes this from the organisms that need different treatment.

Isolation and quarantine

  • The tank or pond is the unit to treat. Equipment must not be moved to other systems without drying or disinfection.
  • Overwintering ponds and holding systems are where this organism does its damage, and both are hard to isolate within.

When a vet is the right call

  • Rapid unexplained losses, particularly in cool water
  • Mucus film and flashing with water quality confirmed good
  • Any decision to medicate that rests on suspicion alone
