White spots on a fish

Small white spots on the body and fins, typically the size of a grain of salt, often with the fish flicking against surfaces before the spots appear.

Short answer

Discrete salt-grain spots on the body and fins usually indicate whitespot. Several other conditions look similar, and treatment differs, so identify carefully before medicating.

Check these first, in this order

  1. Look closely at the spots: size, distribution and whether they are raised.
  2. Check water parameters — outbreaks almost always follow a stressor.
  3. Note whether the fish were flashing or scraping before the spots appeared.
  4. Check the temperature history; a chill is the classic trigger.

Ordered by urgency, then by how commonly each one turns out to be the answer. The discriminator is the observation that separates this cause from the others — use it before acting.

Velvet (Oodinium / Piscinoodinium)

How to tell: A fine gold or rust-coloured dust rather than discrete spots, best seen with a torch at an angle. Fish often clamp fins and breathe rapidly early.

Check

  • Look at the fish under angled torchlight
  • Whether the coating is dust-like rather than spotted

Response

  • Treat promptly — velvet progresses faster than whitespot
  • Dim the tank, as the organism is photosynthetic
  • Seek veterinary guidance for valuable stock

Whitespot (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)

How to tell: Distinct raised white spots the size of salt grains, scattered over body and fins, often preceded by flicking. Spots come and go as the parasite completes its cycle.

Check

  • Spot size and shape
  • Whether fish were flashing
  • Recent temperature drop or new fish added

Response

  • Treat the whole tank; the free-swimming stage is in the water, not only on the fish.
  • Raising temperature accelerates the life cycle so treatment reaches the vulnerable stage sooner — but increase aeration at the same time, and check the species tolerates it.
  • Scaleless fish including loaches and corydoras need reduced doses of many treatments.
  • Continue treatment for the full course after spots disappear.

Epistylis or a bacterial/fungal growth

How to tell: Spots look tufted or fuzzy rather than like discrete grains, and often sit on damaged areas. Does not respond to whitespot treatment.

Check

  • Whether the growth is fuzzy at the edges
  • Whether it centres on wounds or fin damage

  • Improve water quality first
  • Seek veterinary advice; antiparasitic treatment will not help

Breeding tubercles on a male fish

How to tell: White bumps on the gill covers and pectoral fins of a male cyprinid in breeding condition. Symmetrical, and the fish is otherwise entirely normal.

Check

  • Species and sex
  • Whether the spots are symmetrical and confined to the head and pectorals

Response

  • No action. This is normal breeding condition.

When this is not a problem at all

Checked before anything else, because a keeper who learns their swollen fish is carrying eggs and their spotted fish is a breeding male has been spared two unnecessary medications.

  • Breeding tubercles on a male cyprinid

    Not a problemcommon

    How to tell it apart: Small white bumps confined to the gill covers and leading edge of the pectoral fins, symmetrical, on males of danios, barbs, minnows and goldfish in breeding condition. Normal seasonal biology.

  • Air bubbles or debris in front of the fish

    How to tell it apart: Look again from a different angle. Anything that shifts relative to the fish when you move was never on it.

    How to tell it apart: Discrete, countable specks around 0.5–1 mm, raised, with sharp edges, spreading over days. This is the commonest cause and it is still not the only one.

  • Epistylis

    How to tell it apart: Tufts with a slightly fuzzy edge, often larger and more irregular than whitespot and frequently centred on an existing sore. Does not respond to whitespot treatment — so treatment failure is the signal to reconsider rather than to treat harder.

  • Velvet

    How to tell it apart: A fine gold or rust dusting rather than countable spots, best seen with a torch along the flank in a darkened room.

  • Lymphocystis

    How to tell it apart: Larger, irregular, cauliflower-textured growths developing over weeks rather than days, usually on fin margins.

  • Water mould

    How to tell it apart: A raised cotton-wool mass with filaments that stream in the current, at one site rather than scattered as specks.

What not to do

  • Treating before identifying. Whitespot and velvet treatments differ, and neither helps a bacterial growth.
  • Full-strength copper or formalin doses in a tank with loaches, corydoras or invertebrates.
  • Raising temperature without increasing aeration.

When to involve a vet

  • The identification is uncertain.
  • Fish are dying despite treatment.
  • The affected fish are a species known to tolerate standard treatments poorly.

Prevention
